Blue flame picture in an Ideal Concord gas boiler. Pale yellow, the colour of a candle flame, would indicate danger! It is caused by unburnt carbon particles in the outer flame mantle. Where there is unburnt carbon there is also carbon monoxide! Tinges of orange, red and mauve are fine and are usually caused by minute metallic particles passing through the flame.
If you’re looking for information about central heating problems and fault-finding we run another web site, lovekin.net. There are case histories of appliance and controls faults we’ve dealt with and a number of articles relating to gas central heating. We deal with the sometimes confused issue of the difference between gross and net efficiency in gas appliances and also with a simple method for balancing radiators. Radiator balancing always takes some time but it’s not technically difficult; it requires no special tools or thermometers, just simple screwdrivers and an adjustable spanner and a little bit of effort to be neat, tidy and logical. It’s all explained in the article.

We work with mains gas only (natural gas) not LPG
Flue gas analysis printout. We attach one copy to your invoice and keep another for our records.
Using a combustion analyser to service a Baxi Boston gas boiler. We’re measuring main burner pressure and sampling the combustion gases to check their ratio in the primary flue.
New, high efficiency Greenstar Ri boiler with the casing removed during a service
Old Baxi Bermuda back boiler stripped down for servicing. These are much less common than they used to be as they are gradually being replaced with room-sealed, wall hung, high efficiency gas appliances.
When we service any gas boiler or fire we go through a number of safety checks.
With a boiler we check the route and condition of the flue and the flue operation. We look at the appliance location and check for damage, like rusting, which might affect the integrity of the combustion casing. We look at the casing seals too, as damage to the casing or seals could allow poisonous flue gases, including carbon monoxide, to enter the room.
Some manufacturers specifically limit how deep we go in a service; otherwise, we check and clean the flueways through the heat exchanger, the main burner and burner injectors and the pilot burner, before re-assembling the boiler.
By measuring the burner pressure or the inlet working pressure we’re able to check that the correct amount of gas is being used, or we may carry out a gas rate test at the meter.
If we can, we run a flue gas combustion analysis test using an electronic combustion gas analyser. It is no longer legal to install a new boiler without running a gas analysis test as part of the commissioning process and the same test is an important part of servicing all the newer high efficiency gas appliances.
Besides servicing, Lovekin install gas boilers and install and repair central heating systems. If you’re thinking of changing your boiler, or replacing radiators, valves or controls please feel free to ring us. We’ll be happy to talk to you and we’ll give you honest, straightforward advice.
