Flame picture in an Ideal Concord boiler. This is the clean blue colour we’re looking for and the mauve tinges are fine. Pale yellow flames, the colour of a match flame or candle flame, would indicate danger and a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning due to poor combustion.  The commonest causes of combustion problems with this type of open-flued boiler are dirty or blocked air intake filters or choked lint arrestor filters in the burner. Both of these should be prevented by regular servicing. Believe it or not, spider cobwebs are another problem!

Lovekin work well beyond GU51 and GU52.

We're also slowly updating another web site recording information about central heating problems and fault-finding. You’ll find it at The site is not very elegant yet but we’ve written a number of articles including radiator balancing, central heating system pressure, condensate problems and high efficiency boilers and gross and net boiler efficiency. There are also articles about Grundfos central heating circulating pumps and Honeywell motorised valves. We have several other articles in mind and will write them up as soon as we can find time!

Gas Safe Register logo Greenstar Ri combustion analysis

Combustion analysis can provide a surprising amount of information. The first thing we check is the amount of carbon monoxide in the flue product and the ratio of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The CO/CO₂ ratio gives us a good indication of combustion safety. Low excess air levels can be a clue where we suspect a fan is running under-speed. Efficiency figures are often surprising. The gas industry makes big claims about efficiency savings with new boilers. These analysis results are from a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Ri gas boiler and the gross efficiency of 88.3% is typical for a new high efficiency appliance; however, many older non-condensing boilers return 80-82%. There would be gas savings to be made by changing the boiler but only about 10% in that case.

We work with mains gas only (natural gas) not LPG.

All gas engineers have to re-sit their exams every 5 years and the emphasis on the courses is always on safety. When we service any gas appliance we go through a number of safety checks.

With a boiler service we check the appliance location, the route and condition of the flue and the flue operation. We check for damage, like rusting, which might affect the integrity of the combustion casing and we look at the casing seals. Damage to the casing or seals could allow poisonous flue gases to enter the room and would make the appliance Immediately Dangerous (ID).

Unless the manufacturers specify otherwise, we check and clean the flueways through the heat exchanger, the main burner and burner injectors and the pilot burner, before re-assembling the boiler.

To establish that the correct amount of gas is being burnt we may check the burner pressure or the inlet working pressure or we may carry out a gas rate test at the meter. It’s not uncommon to find boilers where the gas supply pipe is undersized so the correct heat output can never be achieved.

If it’s possible we’ll run a combustion analysis test using an electronic combustion gas analyser. It is no longer legal to install a boiler without running a gas analysis test as part of the commissioning process and the same test is a vital part of servicing high efficiency gas boilers.

We also install gas boilers and central heating systems and we’d be happy to quote you to replace radiators or radiator valves, motorised valves and heating system controls like programmers and thermostats. If you’ve got problems with your system please feel free to ring us — we’ll talk you through things you can check first and, if necessary, arrange to come and see you.
